Title Transactions

SCENARIO 1
You moved to Ohio from out of state.  You own the vehicle free and clear of any liens, and it is titled in one or more persons’ names.  You will need the following:

• Original out-of-state title. If you do not have it, a request for a duplicate must be made in the state the original title was issued
• Out-of-state vehicle inspection, which can be performed at any motor vehicle bureau registrar or new car dealership
• All persons whose names appear must be present, or a notarized power of attorney must be completed and submitted in any person’s absence

SCENARIO 2
You have moved to Ohio from another state. The title is in one or more person’s names, the vehicle is being financed, or you are making payments to a lender. You will need the following:

• Original out-of-state title. If you do not have it, a request for one may be obtained from the Clerk of Courts title office
• Out-of-state vehicle inspection, which can be performed at any motor vehicle bureau registrar or new car dealership
• All persons whose names appear must be present, or a notarized power of attorney must be presented in any person’s absence
• The security agreement if you have borrowed money to purchase the vehicle

SCENARIO 3
You have purchased a vehicle from a person who lives in Ohio.  You will need the following:

• Notarized signature from seller on the back of valid Ohio title
• The security agreement if you have borrowed money to purchase the vehicle.

SCENARIO 4
You have moved to Ohio from out of state, and you have leased a vehicle in your previous state.  You will need: 

• Original out-of-state title. If you do not have it, a request for one may be obtained from the Clerk of Courts title office
• Out-of-state vehicle inspection, which can be performed at any motor vehicle bureau registrar or new car dealership
• A copy of your lease papers
• Notarized power of attorney from leasing company allowing you to sign for them

Note: If lease company’s address is in Ohio, the title will need to be processed in the county of the lease company’s address.

SCENARIO 5
You have purchased a used vehicle from an individual in another state.  You will need the following: 

• Original out-of-state title assigned by seller
• Out-of-state vehicle inspection, which can be performed at any motor vehicle bureau registrar or new car dealership
• Federal odometer statement
• The security agreement if you have borrowed money to purchase the vehicle

SCENARIO 6
You have purchased a new vehicle from an out-of-state dealer.  You will need the following: 

• Bill of sale
• MCO manufacturer’s certificate of origin assigned to you
• Federal odometer statement
• The security agreement (if you have borrowed money to purchase the vehicle)

SCENARIO 7
You have purchased a used vehicle from a dealership in another state.  You will need the following: 

• A bill of sale
• Original out-of-state title assigned to you
• Out-of-state vehicle inspection, which can be performed at any motor vehicle bureau registrar or new car dealership
• Federal odometer statement
• The security agreement if you have borrowed money to purchase the vehicle
