The Office of the Clerk of Courts traces its beginnings to the position of ancient clerics who maintained records and was responsible for correspondence and had powers to issue writs ordered by the courts.
The Clerk of Courts Office plays a vital role in the service of justice to all citizens. This office is responsible for filing, docketing and preserving all court pleadings for civil, felony criminal and domestic relations cases. The Clerk’s Office also receives all monies associated with the filings and sees for their proper accounting. The legal office is open Monday thru Friday, 8:30-4:30 and is located on the third floor of the courthouse.
A staff of 6 receives entries, maintains past records, calls juries and insures that subpoenas and other legal documents are properly served on parties.
The Title Department is also under the jurisdiction of the Clerk of Courts. This office located at 121 East Main Street St. Clairsville and operates with a staff of 7. It processes an average of 2750 titles per month. The hours of this office are Monday thru Friday 8:30-4:15. There is a branch office of the Title Department located in Bellaire Ohio at the Belmont County Court Building, 400 Imperial Plaza. This office is staffed Tuesday and Thursday 8:30-4:30.
